Q: WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT METHODS OF EXFOLIATION?
MICRODERMABRASION is an exfoliating procedure that removes the superficial layer of dry, dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion machines buff and polish the skin using a stream of fine crystals or a diamond tip.
FRACTIONAL LASER TREATMENTS remove layers of skin tissue in a fractionated method, meaning that thin columns of skin are removed, leaving the skin surrounding each column intact to aid in healing. This helps reduce age spots, also known as sun freckles, liver spots, and lentigines, as well as fine lines.
ACID PEELS include TCA, lactic acid, AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), glycolic acid, and salicylic acid. Chemicals that help to peel off the dead outer layer of the skin, they speed up the production of new, fresh skin.
EXFOLIATING CREAMS AND LOTIONS include Amlactin and Retin A, which increase cell turnover by exfoliating the top layers of the skin.
Q: WHY IS EXFOLIATION IMPORTANT?
Exfoliating on a regular basis can increase your skin care routine’s efficacy and help rejuvenate your skin. Whether you have dry, normal, oily, or sensitive skin, exfoliation can bring new life to your complexion, even give it a perfect glow. While you shouldn’t employ the same methods on your face as you would on your body, the benefits of a little head to toe exfoliating can be remarkable.
Q: WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR SKIN WHEN YOU EXFOLIATE?
Exfoliation involves the removal of the oldest, dead skin cells on the skin’s outer surface. Exfoliation takes place in all facials, as well as during microdermabrasion or chemical peels at medical spas. It can be mechanical or chemical, as in peeling products. When a peeling product is applied, it causes trauma to the skin and eventually peels off. This process can be mild or more noticeable, based on the peel’s method. The face takes 7-10 days to peel and heal, the body and arms take 14-17 days, and the legs & feet take 21-25 days to heal. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled.
Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU EXFOLIATE?
Exfoliating should be done on a regular basis: once a day or twice a week for mild exfoliation (Obagi Exfoderm or Obagi Retinol 1.0), once a week to twice a month for more intense treatments (peels).
